Eyelashes Transplantation

EYELASH TRANSPLANTS

What are eyelash implants?

Eyelash implants  are a permanent solution to sparse eyelashes along the upper lash line. Eyelash Implants can be achieved via hair transplant methods like follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit transplantation (FUT). Donor hair follicles can be harvested from the scalp or sometimes the legs. Candidates should keep in mind that hair growth from the implants will continue to grow like the hair from the area where it was harvested, therefore, regular trimming will be required.

Who is the ideal candidate for an eyelash implant procedure?

The ideal candidate for an eyelash implant has sparse eyelashes and is looking for permanent enhancements (unlike temporary eyelash extensions) to volume, density, and distribution. Eyelash implants are not recommended for those with poor donor sites, or those with hair loss due to medication, medical treatments, or stress.

Do you have weak, damaged, missing sparse or short lashes?

If you have experienced a loss of your lashes through injury, trauma, overuse of eyelash extensions, hair pulling, or you simply want longer thicker more dense living and growing lashes without mascara, an Eyelash Transplant procedure may be for you!

Procedure: Using comfortable local anesthesia, the procedure is completed in less than two hours in the office/out-patient setting.  Hair follicles from the back of the scalp (‘donor area’) are harvested and then implanted into the eyelid.   Absorbable stitches are used to seal the donor area, which remains undetectable both during and after the healing process.   Usually 24 to 40 or more lashes can be placed per eyelid during a session.    The implanted follicles (like the seeds of a plant) will grow and produce hair permanently.   The newly growing lashes will possess the same characteristics as scalp hair. The lashes will need to be routinely trimmed and curled.   An ‘eyelash perm’ is recommended for those patients with straighter hair.

What is the average recovery associated with an eyelash implant procedure?

The average recovery following an eyelash implant is about three to five days. Eye crusting, redness, and swelling around the upper eyelids and lash line usually resolves within a few days, and most patients resume normal activities within one week. Patients will need to take care to not excessively manipulate the transplanted areas.

What are the potential side effects of an Eyelash Implant procedure?

Possible side effects of an eyelash implant include hemorrhage, infection, itching, scarring, swelling, and telogen effluvium (shedding or thinning of the hair).

What can someone expect from the results of an eyelash implant procedure?

The results of an eyelash implant are not immediately noticeable following the procedure. After three months, transplanted hairs will shed and begin new hair growth. The majority of new hair growth will occur after five to twelve months, and continue to improve over twelve to eighteen months. Patients will need to trim and maintain the eyelash hair for a natural, refreshed look.
